Dems Bring Back Bills For Driver's Licenses, ID For Immigrants

A renewed push at allowing residents to obtain a state identification card or driver's license regardless of their immigration status were introduced Tuesday, with supporters calling the proposal a way of allowing everyone the ability to be an active part of their communities.

The proposed Drive SAFE – Safety, Access, Freedom and the Economy – bills would provide driver's licenses or state identification cards to all residents, including those who may not be in the country legally.

Supporters said driver's licenses for immigrants are important for those seeking to make their way in Michigan. They said the bills would allow immigrants working to make a living support their families, get to work or to the store or other public places.
